Cowherd

Approximately 180 Falling Timber Farm females will calve on one of three farms in Warren, Franklin, and Caldwell county this year.  Each year we retain replacement females and offer the remainder to registered and commercial breeders.  Typically we sell about 30 to 40 herd bull prospects and finish out steers on grain and silage produced on the farm.

In 1974 we entered the registered seedstock business by replacing our commercial herd of mostly Polled Herefords with groups of heifers from six different Performance Tested Herds.  We purchased the best performance tested bulls we could find and rigidly culled for continued improvement.  More recently we have used extensive A.I. techniques and retained bulls from our best cow families.  This has really helped improve udder quality and uniformity of the cowherd.  The goal has been to produce highly productive, predictable females that will calve at 2 years of age, have great dispositions, and breed back like clock work.  As the accuracy of EPDs improve, we are using this data, as well as our knowledge of multiple generations of cow families at Falling Timber Farm, to fast-forward genetic progress.

           

In recent years a majority of the cows were bred to proven bulls with curve bending genetics and cleaned up with bulls from our best cow families.  Current AI sires include Top Secret, World Class, Feltons Legend, VPI Limited Edition, MC Ranger, Boomer 29F, Master Duty, Stewart, Reload, Triple Plus 20L, Wrangler 19D, Harland, and Progress.
